The objective of aesthetic treatment is to
give an illusion of straight teeth. Although
the teeth may not be in perfect alignment,
if they give the impression that they are,
the aesthetic goal will have been achieved.
Such an illusion can sometimes be achieved
with cosmetic contouring, a simple and
painless reshaping procedures performed by
reducing some of the tooth structure with
finely ground diamond.
In modern dentistry, cosmetic contouring is
used to improve the appearance of the smile
by giving the illusion of uniformity and
alignment. When performed successfully, it
is generally the most preferred treatment
because no anesthesia is required, it is
relatively inexpensive, and it takes less
time than most other cosmetic procedures.
Moreover, function is often improved through
cosmetic contouring. Reshaping and polishing
malpositioned teeth make them easy to clean
and reduce the likelihood of fracture.
If cosmetic contouring isn't a viable
solution, composite resin binding may be an
effective alternative and is usually
performed in conjunction with cosmetic
contouring.
